Who We Are

We are a Junior Bassmasters club, affiliated with the Florida Bass Federation and sponsored by Big Bend Bass in Tallahassee Florida, for youth from around 11 years* up to 18 years of age.

*The Florida Federation competitions include age classes of 11-14 and 15-18. Our club will accept younger individuals as long as they meet our minimum requirements for membership. We do currently have a waiting list to get into this club. What We Do

Our club has a tournament on the first Saturday of the month on Tallahassee area waters. In these tournaments we are paired up with a boat captain who operates the boat and takes us to where we would like to fish. We fish where ever we would like (as long as it is safe to get to) and each of us takes half the time at the front of the boat operating the trolling motor. Our boat captains can make suggestions as far as baits and techniques and coach us in other ways but the fishing, catching and landing of fish is up to us. At the end of the tournament day we weigh our fish and the top placing anglers receive prizes donated by sponsors.

We hold our club meetings once per month on the third Monday of each month. At these meetings we discuss club business, fund raising activities and pass along other information.

Federation Affiliation

Since our club is affiliated with the Florida Bass Federation’s youth program, anglers that meet the age requirements of the Federation will be able to compete in the Federation Junior State Championship if they qualify. This will be a tournament where anglers 11-14 compete in one group and anglers 15-18 compete in another and will consist of one practice day where the boat captain will be able to coach and assist the anglers and one tournament day where the boat captains cannot offer advise. These anglers will come from Junior chapters from all over the state of Florida. The winners of each of these age groups will qualify for the Junior Championship, where each angler will again be paired with a boat captain but in this case the captain will be a professional angler. There will be a practice day where the pro will be able to coach the youth anglers, then a competition day where they will act strictly as boat captains. Anglers will be competing for prizes and scholarships against anglers from all over the United States.

Minimum Requirements

While the National Federation and Florida Bass Federation age groups start at 11 years of age, we are not limiting our membership to that age. All we require is that an angler have the ability to use their fishing equipment and operate a trolling motor at the same time and be able to stay focused on fishing for a full tournament day. All Junior Anglers must provide their own fishing rods, reels and tackle. They must also provide their own Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device.

Our Sponsoring Club

Each Federation affiliated junior club must have a sponsoring adult club. Our sponsoring club is Big Bend Bass of Tallahassee. Big Bend is a Florida Bass Federation affiliated club, founded in the mid 1980’s, that currently has over 40 active members. Since 1999 Big Bend Bass has placed at least one member on the Florida Bass Federation State Team in all but two years and is home of the 2000 Florida Federation State Champion. Big Bend Bass also had a member compete at the Federation National Championship in April 2005. The members of Big Bend Bass are committed to assuring the future of bass fishing in their support of the Junior Bassmasters of Tallahassee. They look forward to the opportunity to instruct the youth of the Tallahassee area in boating safety, fishing/tournament ethics and tactics and resource conservation.
